CHAPTER 8

The next morning, Cassie woke to the gentle rumble of a machine outside her dome. She peered open half an eye, wondering what had her sleeping so late, when she realized that the light outside the portal had yet to rise. She grumbled, swinging her legs out of the small, single bed, ready to go see what was happening, when the sound dissipated like the machine was driving away.

“Hmm,” she grumbled. Sleepily, she flopped back down onto her pillow, her long legs still hanging from the bedside. “Well, I’m up now.”

Cassie dressed in the darkness, pulling on a pair of shorts and a tank top, before rummaging around her discarded clothes and finding her favorite cozy sweater. The heat had long worn off from the solar panels, and the dome was cool beyond the comfort of her warm bed.

Just as she approached the airlock into her kitchen, she saw the hint of the suns rising on the horizon. It lit her small space with its orange glow, the light glinting off her shiny countertops.

She poured a glass of juice from her tiny fridge and grabbed one of her many muffins. She moved to sit down at her table, but the sound that had woken her this morning kept nagging at her mind.

She pushed the button to open her first airlock, walked into the small chamber, and donned her work boots. After peering out the door to the outside, she opened the second door, her muffin in one hand, her juice in the other.

The sand didn’t allow for tracks to hold for long, but along the side of her dome, she found the distinct tracks of a large piece of machinery. Her gaze skittered around her plot, wondering who would have been here. And then the pile of pipes caught her attention out along the west ridge, and she hurried over, curious as to their meaning.

“What the…?”

She plopped the last bite of muffin into her mouth and set down her cup so she could pick up the log board that was propped up on the pipes. It was a drawing of an irrigation system, one that would carry water from the free-flowing spring to her crops.

She turned around, her eyes trailing from the drawing to her fields. Had someone dropped off all the equipment she needed to build a watering system?

Excitedly, Cassie hurried back to her dome, collecting her tools and grabbing her work gloves. This would make things—everything—so much better. She’d save hours and tons of backbreaking work by having access to water right next to her fields. The water was fresh and drinkable, something that she’d never need to worry about again being so far away from town.

She took her time examining the instructions, they were easy to interpret, the system a simple setup. She worked right through lunch and into the early evening, and when she finally stood up, stretching and shaking out the cramping in her legs, she turned to find Xalen standing behind her.
